Same problem on Gateway notebook this is the post that solved mine.

"Install the Intel Matrix Storage Manager.
Download from the Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Server and Embedded Processor Technology - Intel

For such a popular chip I would have thought the driver would be included with Windows, but it's not."

Yeah well I'm back. Just had my first 2 min freeze since upgrading the graphics driver. Guess it was just wishful thinking that it had fixed the issue. Granted since updating the driver it hasn't frozen NEAR as often....

@thepretender: great evidence this also solve my freeze problems on my Toshiba notebook!

I still have problems to get the latest nvidia mobile driver 185.85 on my notebook! After installation and a restart I get everytime a BSOD!

Having the same problem with my HP Pavilion dv5000.

On Vista and XP nothing like that ever happens. I will install Intel's Matrix Storage driver and will report later today.

    Fixed here

I had the very same problem with Widnows 7 RC x64 in my Aspire 5920 (Intel GMA x3100 version), sudden pauses for 2 or 3 minutes, with hdd led on.

Fixed by installing the Intel Matrix Storage 8.8 drivers for Vista x64, everything runs fine now. In fact, much better than with the bundled Vista Home Premium.

No update for integrated Mobile 965 GPU was required. After 1 week running fine I downgraded the gfx drivers (to Vista x64 version) and the system is still running fine. Had to downgrade it because Windows 7 RC drivers (wddm 1.1) have no opengl acceleration, or it is awfuly broken.

I've been experiencing the same problems over recent weeks with various builds of Win 7 x64. It would appear that on my system, it's the installed software causing the problem, so I've just installed software that I know works without a problem. I then install applications individually to see if it causes a problem, if it does, I uninstall and usually the problem goes away, give it few days of freeze free time then install another app until I can narrow it down. In my experience Applications generally to do with Video playing / converting and the like, seem to be the candidates for the freezes.

I've been using XP for the past 8 years or so and love specific applications such as VLC and ConvertXto DVD, and it's weird not having them on the PC but I have been hunting down new, similar software as alternatives, it's a slow process but as all new things Win 7 has to be treated on a trial and error basis. I think Win 7 is the monkey's nuts so I'm staying with it until the software manufacturers catch up.

I'm still having problems with the viewing of various video/audio formats but will persist and find the best available, after all, it is the best way to learn about the system you use.

Attached are apps that seem to work on my system

    same problem!

    Hello all!
Have the same pb on one of our pc, a gigabyte mobo dual core. Have tried to figure out with no success yet, but felt it was more likely to happen when ie8 is running.
    Still, since yesterday, no more spinning and clicking and freezing thingy, crossing figgers; I thought the HDD (samsung 750gb spinpoint)could be responsible for that but did not (yet ) reinstall on an other hdd;
Instead I tried to change the sata cable and plugged it in sata2 instead of 0.
Will come back if freezing happen again.
