Unfortunately this is the nature of support forums, people join up ask a question and then read the replies and never come back or acknowledge that they have been helped or thank people for their input.
I am an active member of a lot of forums and one in particular where I have just on eight thousand post helping people and have only been thanked about ten times.
I don't worry as i know that other people with the same problem will benefit from the post being left up
Your post brought me some peace of mind.:) And strengthened my desire to keep me active here in SF! I feel sorry for 8000/10 ... It is very frustrating!

I agree with almost everything, except the part that no one appreciates us. "Almost nobody" does justice to those who appreciate us.

I tend to forgive those who do this if they have less than 20 posts or so thinking they are rather new at it and may have placed the original question in the wrong forum.

The ones that stick in my craw are the ones where they OP posts then ithing 10 minutes posts a second time stating No one??? or start ranting as if this was Microsoft and venting their spleen over an issue that could easily be resolved if they actually asked for help.

You make use of interesting techniques to deal with this problem. I imagine you are a good chess player! To avoid misunderstanding, it was a compliment!

point well made not everyone is at fault but these are testy subjects and can swing either way im pretty sure someone out there has a con opinion about our post but sadly enough the pro's outweight the cons here

Once again I must consider that you have your reasons for thinking so...

A lot of the times you can almost sense when an OP is not going to return - but as you say it's worthwhile for the benefit of future searchers.

Many a time the OP themselves may not be helped - but countless unseen visitors are.

Yep. For those who are new to a forum, or forums in general - there is a certain level of leeway you give.

The ones that stick in my craw are the ones where they OP posts then ithing 10 minutes posts a second time stating No one??? or start ranting as if this was Microsoft and venting their spleen over an issue that could easily be resolved if they actually asked for help.
Yes. I rush to help those as well

I remember on one site I was member of briefly, a guy started a thread that, based on the thread title, seemed like the solution would be simple, and had two replies already, so I over looked it. I looked back 30 minutes later and the thread had three more replies. Seemed like the guy was getting help. An hour later I came across the same thread again. The number of replies was 9, and the thread was closed/locked. I then decided to take a look. It was a guy asking how to do something in WMP and 8 bumps. The final reply was a mod asking the guy why he bumped it 8 times. The mod had also skipped over the thread a few times because he thought the guy was getting help.

What gets to me is the people that ask questions that I have to come up with (what I consider to be) a creative solution for, and never report back. I want to know if what I came up with worked for future reference. I mean, I had no clue if it would actually work or not, but I thought it might. If I don't have the problem, I can't try it for myself.
