Surely not -- what's wrong with a BRAIN.

Mind you in some countries you just have to despair at the standard of education on offer to those who can't afford or don't want to buy it privately.

I absolutely HATE blackberry's - a symbol of 21st century slavery. We call them "Tethering Machines" since if you are "email-able" at any time of the day or night you will obviously be answerable to someone else at THEIR rather than YOUR convenience.

I have no issue with mobile phones - but I definitely draw the line at blackberry's.

Getting back to the point at issue - Google is OK at what it does but if you really need something more specialized then there are plenty of alternatives out there already.

Google will only go away if people find it's not returning decent answers.

For instance if I serach "Quantum Computers" or "Quantum Computing" I want scientific article links returned not zillions of stores world wide calling themselves "Quantum Computers" etc.

Google will fail if the search results become too based on advertising rather than accuracy.

Cheers

Very true. While it has a little advertising based answers now, most of it seems good. If you go to the last page of a search, it tends to not be very important. All the good stuff is on the first 2-3 pages. I read (somewhere a while ago...) that 90% of people don't look past the first page of results......

I thought this was interesting and relevant to this thread.. It turns out Google has had something similar in the works for a while, it's called Google Squared. The idea is that it presents results in a spreadsheet and allows you to drill down into the minutia based on your interest. It reminds me a little of a mandala, constantly allowing you to zoom in for never-ending detail. There's a great (and pretty funny) read about it here. Here's an excerpt:

"In some cases, there's not much effort needed. A colleague who shall remain nameless pointed out that both "Star Trek" and "porn stars" provided pretty relevant information without any tweaking."
