A 1966 Buick Skylark. Bought in 1977 when it was almost 12 and I was barely 18.

Everything worked, including the clock and A/C. Good memories.

This one is not mine, but same color, etc.

Hi all
an old used "Split Windscreen Moggie Minor" 1959 Vintage bought for around 5 GBP / 8 USD.

Worked a treat and economical too.

It had a Starting handle --as an impecunious student back then Icouldn't afford to buy a new battery so I used the Starting Handle or parked on a Hill and "bump started" it.

Actually even though I've had a lot of better and newer cars I still remember that one with affection and it was one of my most RELIABLE cars ever including modern cars.

My main gripe was it only had Drum Brakes -- even at 110 KPH braking wasn't excellent. Disc brakes came in a lot later as did ABS.

I don't have a photo unfortunately but it was a long time ago.

Cheers

Jim, at least the brakes were hydraulic. My Model A had mechanical brakes as did all of my early motorcycles. One just had to be careful not to get in a bind.

My first car was a 1936 Model Y Ford. My dad bought it for £10 and gave it to me on my 11th birthday in 1954.

I learnt how to drive in that car by using it all over our farm in Ireland. I did all my crashing into haystacks, hedges and ditches before I was allowed on the roads.

After some fifty years of driving in most countries of the world (HM Forces) I have never had an accident. (touches wood rapidly). Had I not had the opportunity to learn control on that farm, I am sure I would have caused mayhem on the local roads.

I sold the car in 1992 for £11 £1 profit after 38 years

Hi there Beauparc
So unbelievably there is someone OLDER on this Forum than me.

That car in good nick now would net you a NICE decent amount that would probably cost the same as a decent HOUSE in England or Ireland now.

Anyway it shows a lot of us had REAL fun with our first cars.

I even remember when the Windscreen wipers were broken I had a Hanky on a piece of string slung between the two front door windows and had to manipulate it by moving the string.

You'd NEVER get away with that these days -- but back then A LOT OF FUN .

I was in Swansea last Winter -- at least I knew how to tell the Welsh how to drive safely on the M4 when it was icy -- but most of the accidents were caused by "visitors".

Even at my age a night out in Swansea's Wind Street is always interesting including a visit to Dylan Thomas's watering hole "The No sign Bar".
