I always thought it was the content of the post that was the important thing
Sigs are a useful part of a members identity, as are Avatar's but the bit above the sig is more important :)

I'll agree with you there Nigel and I agree with John about Mercurials sig, it's definitely too much and would certainly distract from anything in the post because it's the only thing you'd see it's so flashy.

Sigs are great. I made a new one and was going to post it, but something screwed up my MBR, and I had to reinstall.

I just made a new sig in 3D Studio Max 9 lol!
