Chromebook has white screen - won't do anything

Hi! We got our grandchildren a chromebook recently. It has been working fine. But today, the kids were playing with it and touching buttons they shouldn't have touched. I was too busy to interfere and thought I could fix it back to normal later, but I wasn't able to. The screen looks white and says "Google" on it, and nothing happens when it is turned on. It doesn't help to turn it off and then turn it back on. Google search gives no evidence that anyone has seen this kind of problem before or how to fix it. All they mention is a completely white screen problem - but the screen is not completely white. Should I take out the battery? That has helped one of my laptops before when it got a blue screen and there was no way to turn it off.

I forgot to say it is possible to tun it off by clicking the on/off button. But whenever I turn it back on, it still has that same white screen with "Google" in the center and nothing else and no controls visible to get to settings, etc.
