2.3 is not yet released. Still in beta.

It's not in beta, just the source code hasn't been released yet and official updates haven't been rolled out to phones from the manufacturers yet. The SDK has been released though already. Once the source code is released, there'll be custom ROMs out soon after that. You'll have to wait a while longer after that for the manufacturers to roll it out to phones officially though.

I still feel iOS is better than Android. I keep experiencing issues like Application not responding and handset freezes for a sec while using the touch screen. Its not an issue with my handset as I've experienced this issue on HTC wildfire and few other android powered handsets. I hope they fix this issue in Android 2.3.

I like the Android based smartphones (have a Droid X) because I prefer Google's openness vs. the closed, controlling attitude that Apple has in general. An excellent example of this is AppInventor for Android which is an attempt by Google to give non-developers a way to create their own apps. It's still in Beta but has a lot of potential to open up Android app development.

Not to mention that I wanted to stay away from AT&T as my cell service.

I just checked, and Droid X has an update to 2.3 but I'm not sure if it's the same one everyone will get.

Might be a version number update specific to DroidX, but it's not 2.3 - Gingerbread.

Here is some useful information on program version numbers:

Quote:
Let's say we have program with a version number of 6.1.2

The first number (6) represents the "major" version number. Normally these are only updated if there has been lots of major changes to a program.

The next number (1) represents a minor update. Maybe a feature or two was added to the program, but the overall program remained the same.

The third number (2) represents a bug fix. Our example shows that version

6.1.2 has had 2 bug fixes so far.
