The complexity of making a call or sending a message on Android can be dependent on what phone it is. Some manufacturers put an overlay on the base OS. My Droid is 'vanilla', plain, no overlay and making a call is as simple as 3 taps of the screen for a stored contact, and that's if I use the phone app to find the contact instead of the search widget on the home screen.
I too only have one or two taps to call a stored contact. I haven't had any issue as far as complexity. I use my Droid X and it is easy.

Ive Just bought a Iphone 4 and love it so far, I was new to Itunes so I battled with it for a day or so till I learned the limits of the I tunes software, the only reason I opted for the I phone is I heard the battery life on the android phone I wanted was horrible, the Iphone 4 can last a couple of days without a charge

i can't really give a recommendation not having owned a android phone, but i own an iphone 4, and once you jailbreak it can do many things. The screen resolution is great as well.

    I eagerly await it.

Having played with both extensively, Android takes the cake for me.
