High School Coach suspended for housing homeless kid

I work with homeless youth everyday, and it's stuff like this that really makes me angry.

High School Coach suspended for housing homeless kid

In the movies, taking in a homeless high school kid who turns out to be a heck of a football player makes for a heartwarming story.

In real life … not so much.

According to reports by the Orlando Sentinel and wftv.com, an Orlando-area coach was suspended for allowing a homeless player to move in with him.

Yep, and now both he and the school face fines. Absolutely ridiculous. What was he supposed to do, leave the kid on the streets?

I agree with both you and lorddenis. I spent 6 years living on the streets when I was a teenager and would have been much better off if I had met someone like this football coach.

Just goes to show, sometimes doing the right thing comes with stupid consequences.

The FHSAA rule in question states that "No school employee, athletic department staff member or representative of the school's athletic interests may be involved, directly or indirectly, in promising, offering free or reduced-cost rent for housing."
did he or did he not break this rule? there is a right way and a wrong way to go about things. there are a number of things he could have done to help the kid without breaking this rule.

Rule or not, the coach did the right thing. Do you know how many youth shelters are out there? Not many, and the ones that are average around 15 beds. 13 kids die on the streets everyday from abuse, disease and suicide. This coach made sure that this kid didn't turn into a statistic.

I don't think anyone will say that the coach did the wrong thing.
I am not sure of the status of this sport if it amateur or professional but I assume this rule was made to stop backhand type payment as part of their salary
