Career choice, suggestions?

I am going to California PolyTechnic (CalPoly) San Luis Obispo right now. Great tech school for engineering, etc.
I am a computer engineering major (and loving it).

As for eccentric, you would fit right in here

(I am too a little).

As for classes: Get your basic GEs out of the way. Take some classes that interest you, like computer classes (programming, hardware, etc). Take things that sound interesting even if you are not sure about them.
The whole idea is to figure exactly what you want to do!

the first two years is usually dedicated to the exact situation that you are in, finding out what you want to do.

of course everyone wants to be the most efficient, etc... but sometimes you just need to take a step back and start to enjoy things (life)... im sure you will figure out what you want to do in due time

if you have to take an extra year of school to do it, so what? college is the best time of your life

Dunno how you guys do things over there, but "finding yourself" and "you can always change majors later" imho isn't the best advice for everyone. Maybe the societies I grew up in were more materialistic, but it seems to me drifting uncertainly is not something you want to do when you're already in college. You want to make a decision now, while changing your mind is still easy; not when you're already several years and semesters down the road and with loans or debts hanging over your head. Not trying to scare you but that's the reality unless your family is bloody rich and can simply enter you into other colleges as many times as you like. I've known people like that... pff, sometimes I wonder why they even bother.

heres what i think:

you are obviously interested in technology, computers and the like... instead of making computers your JOB try something related. many technological fields require computer knowledge. as an engineer 75% of the work i do is on a computer. withot my knowledge of how computers work (because of my hobby) i would be left behind other engineers and forced to catch up.

i say you try to find something that is related to technology (which isint hard to do now a days) but doesnt specifically require you doing what you enjoy now with your free time. some ideas - graphic design, engineering, software programming, architecture, even try accounting or marketing

go research colleges that you are thinking about attending and/or colleges in your area and start calling them up, ask to speak with professors and advisors from those programs.. read about the programs and the jobs they offer when you graduate.. if you do that for a month you will be light years ahead of where i was when i went to college and i made it out ok

most of all it takes determination, and hard work. many people seem to forget that part.
