well.....judging by its brilliant functionality in a BETA state, i'd say YES!!

every MS OS that has come before has been torture to use at this early stage, & its only getting better...

    I say yes.
This is a ridiculously good OS in beta/RC phase and will only get better as the RTM release time draws closer.
    Great work MS

    You're asking the wrong crowd.

It's like going to a Budweiser factory and asking them what their favorite beer is.

I thought you said "Beer". Beer and Budweiser are MUTUALLY INCOMPATABLE.

On this Forum most people will of course say YES W7 is great.

However I'd like to temper the enthousiasm just a little bit.

First is PRICE -- if the OS is too highly priced then XP will stay around for a lot longer -- Even if you have say a 16 MB machine you can run multiple Virtual Windows XP machines giving each one around 3.9GB RAM each, and you can run this on a HOST LINUX system.

Next we have the whole issue of "Cloud computing". This might make a great difference in how we actually use computers and run software on them.

We might well have just a tiny OS in the browser (embedded in the BIOS) which connects to the Internet at boot time and then loads your OS image / software from whatever "provider" you choose or whatever application you want to run.

The problem of "Always On connectivity" really isn't an issue any more in most Western and Asian countries. Wherever mobile phone networks exist Internet access will be possible.

I hope W7 will be a success -- but I rather suspect this just might be the last "Classical" type of Stand alone OS Microsoft produces.

Rumours of W8 (the next OS) abound but with the "Cloud" a lot will happen over the next 18 - 24 months.

    Cheers

It could be, there are just some things that would hurt it.

1.) Like Jimbo said PRICE - If its cheap no one will bat an eye to moving onto a new OS, if its too much they hold back. Make it cheap and it will fly off the shelves.

2.) Learning curve - for the older crowd use to XP can they jump right into 7 and do the stuff they are use too? Everyone here on the boards knows that a lot of things have changed from XP to 7. Those on Vista won't have a hard time moving to 7, but lets face it 7 is not being geared towards Vista users. Im not going to tell you any examples just type "XP vs 7" in google.

3.) Older hardware - for those machine that have been out their for five years will they be able to run 7. We here have been trying to run 7 on anything we can get our hands on.

4.) Marketing - Take a note from Apple marketing is a major key on how people see a product. Just walk outside and watch people with their iPods or iPhones and ask them why they picked that product.

5.) Word of mouth - Face it besides watching TV people get a lot of their facts from friends and family. All of us here on this board could recomment Win7 to anyone due to what we have seen. We are all across the world with different opionins and views. To be truthful I think that 40% of Vista's problem was people bad mouthing it before they even tried it themself's helping spread the slow down of Vista.

If you mess up on any two of these things it will slow Windows 7 from being the OS that it should be. So all in all Windows 7 has a good chance of being a very good product.
