something will happen at the end of 2012 that will change the world forever. could be an asteroid colliding or flying past us close enough to change our polarity. it could be a virus that wipes out most of us. i don't know but something is coming

You actually believe this crap? Nothing is going to happen in 2012, if it does I'll shoot myself. Everyone went into mass panic at the turn of 2000, did anything happen then? No. Did all the computers crash in 200, no. Now, get over it and go on with life.

you may call it crap but that shows you don't know a lot. an asteroid is due to pass by us around 2012. even if it doesn't hit, it may be close enough to shift our orbit. this would create a polar-shift and wipe pretty much the whole planet out. also, around Dec 21, 2012 the planets will align in such a way that could also shift of our orbit. increases in solar flares have been noted and all it takes is one big enough to affect our gravity and again, polar shifting. I also haven't mentioned polar ice caps are melting at a rapid rate. if they melt too much the earth could "flip-flop" and we'll be screwed.

the Mayan's were an ancient civilization with extremely accurate maths and science who vanished without a trace. the mayan calander ends on 21 Dec 2012.

there are a lot of possibilities and too many to discount the fact that something will happen around this time

tw33k, let's not get into insulting each other. We can't all know everything and this is a place for sharing information, let's keep it that way.

You didn't mention Nibiru. If you're a doomsayer, you must mention Nibiru!

Sorry but, the 2012 doomsday scenarios are little more than cultural memes.

The only vague reference in the Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar (most notably Mayan) was a cyclical end of events that was poorly translated from defaced/degraded tablets. There is nothing special about December 21, 2012, except for an unusual celestial alignment. These happen on a regular basis and is nothing to get excited about - unless you consider a 'once every 26,000 years event' exciting. This 'Galactic Alignment' has a fancy name but is akin to turning the page on a calendar. We traverse from the Age of Pisces and into the beginning of another Age of Aquarius. It won't change anything. Not even daylight savings time.

Geomagnetic Reversal, what you incorrectly call 'polar shift' is the hypothesis that a large solar flare will cause the earth's poles to flip over. This process is well known to scientists - it's happened before and it will again. Only it doesn't occur over night, it takes roughly 5000 years.

The bulk of the 2012 doom-hype was derived from initial (and later proven false) reports that Apophis (a very large earth-crossing asteroid) was going to collide with earth. After some delicious crow, they said it was going to be in 2029. Oh wait, then they said 2036 but now they added this 'keyhole' scenario that is REALLY scary. So if Apophis hits this mystical keyhole region, it will shift its orbit just enough to align it for a smack-punch with Earth on its next visit. After some careful re-consideration, it's been determined that Apophis will breeze by at roughly 50million KMs in 2036. She'll blow us a kiss on the way by.

Solar flares over the next few years will become increasingly more turbulent with the real possibility that satellite communications will be knocked out and will affect the earth's magnetic fields - but no more so then they do now. Those in the northern regions can expect especially vivid borealis displays, little more.

At worst, the effects of strong solar flares will be akin to when the U.S. held operation Castle Bravo in the south Pacific, the blast so unexpectedly huge that it effectively created a huge 'EMP' blast. Vast portions of Hawaii and many other areas had no power for a few days.

Instead, they had a luau and partied.
