Genuine answer.. All of the best players in the world play in the MLB. Think about it, scouts go all over to recruit players (hence our Japanese players, Dominican Republic players, etc). If you fill the league with the best players from around the world, I don't see a problem calling it the world series.
There also have been quite a few American players that were just average and went to Japan and did quite well. This would also indicate the level of play in Japan was lower than the US.
The World Series champion team usually travels to Japan and plays Japan's best team. The results are nearly always the same; the American team wins.

That is a question I've long wondered since I was a child. It seems to me that there should be a tourney similar to what the World Cup is. Is it really an "American" game when 3/4 of the players in the MLB are non-American?

They do have the World Baseball Classic now, which is country against country. It has alot of flaws in it though. It is held during spring training and the players are not really in shape. How they decide which country a player can play for is really messed up. For example, if a player was born in the US but one of his parents is from Italy, he can chose to play for Italy. How messed up is that?

You just backed up my argument for it being called the "World Series" better than I could have done myself, intentionally or unintentionally.

I thank you for that

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Sorry, I just couldn't root for the team that knocked my Padres out of the playoffs on the last game of the season. Congrats, but I dislike the Giants more than I do the Dodgers now.

The big team sports of America have gone multi-national.

MLB, NBA, NFL all need have some part in implementing a true "world" league for their respective sports. With a world league, there would be a world play-off and then there can be a true "World Champion."

Baseball is in the best position to make it happen first.

Although American baseball had Euro-Russo origins:
Origins of baseball - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It seems the Americans were a bit more organized, and were able to field professional teams before anyone else could, thus the claim of "The World Series"
Quote:
The modern World Series (like its predecessor series waged between National League and American Association teams from 1884-1890) was so named not because of any affiliation with a corporate sponsor, but because the winner was considered the "world's champion" — the title was therefore simply a shortened form of the phrase "world's championship series."

Thank you Anak this seems to make more sense than anything else I have read in reply to my question. Maybe I've been punched in the head once to often to understand the argument about players from other country's playing in a team that is an American team against another team that is also an American team
