I've researched the origins of baseball extensively (in the U.S. and England), and let me assure you that Russia had nothing to do with it. The rest of that Wikipedia entry is filled with crap.

1.) Baseball developed in America, primarily, because it wasn't British. Cricket was the national pastime in the U.S. until the 1850s.
2.) It was not uncommon in 19th century sports to declare yourself "world champion" anything. Before the World Series there was the Temple Cup, which was sometimes referred to as the World's Championship Series. Before that was the Dauvray Cup, and players got medals that declared them the "World Champion." I'm thinking that the 1869 Red Stockings were occasionally called world champions, but I'm going on memory here and that might not be correct.
3.) Rangers fan here, and I want to puke.

Thank you Anak this seems to make more sense than anything else I have read in reply to my question. Maybe I've been punched in the head once to often to understand the argument about players from other country's playing in a team that is an American team against another team that is also an American team
    Your welcome BrightBlessings.

Colonel Travis can you cite some examples of your extensive research into the origins of the sport of American Baseball?

Russia may not of had anything to do with the game of American Baseball, but they certainly had their own ball and bat game of Lapta:

I do agree with you that
Baseball developed in America, primarily, because it wasn't British.
But, I keep running into references that American Baseball was more a variation of rounders, and not Cricket as you suggest.
In truth, the game evolved over many decades, if not centuries, and its roots are, in reality, a tangled web of bat and ball games brought to this country by immigrants. Some things are, however, certain. We know that baseball does have definite ties to the old English game of rounders and its cousin, the more formal and genteel game of cricket.

"The Shot Heard Round the World". It was a very big event and I had always thought that is why it was called that. Recently I learned that it was the first game on Armed Services Radio and thus was actually heard "Round the World".

Come visit my closet, I've got several thousand documents for a book I'm working on about the early days of professional base ball. I'm a member of SABR, I know who Frank Ceresi is, I've been to Cooperstown for research many times, been to libraries all over New York, Pennsylvania, New England, London & Sheffield, England, blabbedy, blah, blah.

I didn't suggest it was a variation of cricket. I said cricket was the national game in the U.S. before it was overthrown by baseball. Rounders, one o' cat, two o' cat, cricket - baseball is a descendant of all of them. France had a pseudo-baseball-ish game in the late 1700s, early 1800s.

You can find bat/stick and ball games in many cultures going back centuries, so it's impossible to point to one and say THAT was the start of baseball in America. Probably the best single volume book about this is called Ball, Bat & Bishop - The Origins of Ball Games by Robert Henderson.

If anyone doesn't know what SABR is, well being a member requires great baseball knowledge and dedication to the game.

What stories your closet could tell.

Thanks for the lead on that book by Robert Henderson. I'll look into it.

Being a Yankees fan, I have to say I was extremely happy to see the Giants win. Not because Texas beat us, but because of their old ties to New York.

For those that didn't/don't know, the San Francisco Giants were formally known as the New York Giants and played in New York City (Manhattan) from 1883 to 1957 when they moved to San Francisco.

I was hoping to see a Giants/Yankees world series but Texas spoiled that dream

Anyways congrats to the "San Francisco" Giants. Now they have a World Series from New York, and one from San Francisco CA.
Thanks for the info on the Giants...I didn't know that.
