What should I get as a first car?

    Hello guys,

I am thinking of getting my first car once I have a job and have passed my test. I want something reliable and small, but classic.

That will be a challenge in the Uk since the prices are very high. I would opt for a VW Golf, even a used one. Or some recent Japanese model. Subaru has a very good quality track record and the Justy is a neat model (I once owned one). Suzuki SX4 or the Swift are very nice too.

You'll need to put the dog in the back.

May I suggest a Yugo Koral? Sure, its doors may fall off and it may only actually work going downhill but it is cheap.

On a more seroius note, how about a Peugeot 205 or a Golf Gti Mk1/Mk2, small, reliable, classic, fun etc. And most importantly the supply of them in the UK should be pretty good (A whole lot better than in Australia anyway). Just make sure you spend enough to get a good one.

Wow, haven't seen one of those since i was a youngster.
I remember the Goggomobile, Messersmitt, etc.

    Few more for your consideration.
One could work for you and is cheap to run, as well as keeping you fit.

Classic implies old...which could counteract the reliability you seek. I couldn't really suggest a car for you, as I live across the pond so I am unfamiliar with most of the models available to you.
