A sad loss to the world of comedy

Agreed, a very sad loss indeed. Those comedies were real LOL stuff. That's a rare thing.

Nigel. Am I right in thinking he played a straight role in a TV series that was aired in the UK years ago?

I think he played straight in Doctor Kildare, which was one of my mums favourites when I was a kid.
I know I've seen him in straight roles which all added to the comic effect when I saw him in Airplane

    John,

He started as a straight actor, in the 50's, although if you look at his comedy, this is itself, is "played" in a deadpan way most of the time rather than slapstick, so perhaps he always was a great straight actor. I'm sure he did play a TV role or two in his early days, but the old Age/Memory algorithm is taking it's toll today

I don't know how he did Airplane without laughing.....how could you deliver those lines with a straight face? Maybe he should have been a poker player....lol.

    John,

His early television appearances include parts in Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Virginian, and The Wild Wild West. In 1961, he was the lead in a taut Los Angeles police drama called The New Breed. In 1968, he had a major role in the pilot film for the popular police series Hawaii Five-O, and later appeared in one of the seventh season episodes. In 1969, he had the leading role as a police officer in The Bold Ones: The Protectors.

I also remember him in "Forbidden Planet". The theaters back then were converted from Opera Houses. They were beautiful palaces. The one I saw Forbidden Planet in had a ceiling of twinkling lights which looked like stars. It made a space movie like that one seem so much more real.
