    Huh... I boot and I'm already on the net and I only have my cable modem.
    And, I don't need a router at the moment. Seriously.

    When I am at home, all cell phone calls go through cable ... no minute charges.
    No issues connecting to Dell Latitude laptop.

    Nobody is telling you that you have to use a router. What people are telling you is that there are benefits to running one. Having more than one computer means you need to use a router ( there are ways around this but it isn't worth the effort) but the benefits are available to you if you use one with only one computer as most are firewall/routers these days and they can be had for very little money which is a small price to pay for the added security.
