Well when I was 15 1/2 I opened a used motorcycle parts store. I approached my Dad's boss who had 15 years of old motorcycle parts laying around and and empty building next to the Yamaha shop my Dad was service manager at and asked him if I sorted out all the parts and sold them if we could split it 50 /50 and he agreed. I ended up working around 30-40 hours a week there on top of going to school.

That was in 1969-70. From there he got into IRS trouble and Yamaha was looking for another person to take over the dealership and my Dad was approached but he was to scared or something, to make a long story endless the new owner got the dealership with one condition that my Dad was general manager.

So he hired my older brother to run the parts department and the only way I got a job was I spent the whole summer typing out the parts bin labels and setting up the parts department for free.

School started and I went on what they called 4/4 I got school credit for working in the service department. After 9 months I was almost 17, being the service manager for $2.45 an hour working 45 hrs a week and going to school.
My older brother and I started racing motocross and did for about 5-7 years he longer than I.
I turned pro after 3 years. He did sooner since the shop sponsored him and not me (waaaah) but every time he'd get the latest greatest parts I'd get his old ones.
He wound up #8 in the state.
I eventually went to work for L.A. County Fire Dept. fighting brush fires which was hard work but got to fly in in helicopters.

Then made my first huge life mistake and got married. moved to Arizona and helped open a bodyshop with a older friend of mine who used to build custom choppers. He actually had 2 on the cover of Chopper Magazine.

Anyways the last time I rode on the dirt was when I visited my older brother who now was Yamaha corp sponsored and he let me ride the very first L.A.Colosium race during a practice
    .
Eventually I moved back to Lancaster and rode the street since then(knock on wood) and never went down. I once got a ticket for riding a wheelie about a half mile on a 750 Honda not only for the wheelie but also for speeding 75 I think.
Anyways when I got injured I had almost completed building my first custom Harley chopper and it got repoed along with everything else, being it took over 6 months to get my first check even lost the second wife with that one. So I've always wanted to get my first Harley I could actually ride.

The one in the picture wouldn't work for me anyways I'd definitely need a soft tail.

That is a nice looking chopper, Eric.

I'm still an avid rider. I average about 10,000 miles per year on two wheels. I am considering getting a dual sport bike for some off pavement riding. I have ridden my 68 Trophy off road and it does well. But I really don't want to mess up my classic off road.

I have not felt well the last four days. I have not even felt like riding. I do not ride if I am not in top form. I went to the doctor today and he told me I had a sinus infection, which I knew. So I am on an antibiotic and hoping to knock this thing out. Whine I started running a fever, I decided it was time to see the doc.

Carl if the fluid coming out of your nose is green in color it's an infection and antibiotics are prescribed. Make sure you take all of them and don't stop just because you feel better.
If it is clear just an antihistamine will work.
When I am feeling like a cold is setting in, watery itchy eyes and stuffed up head I use Zicam nasal spray(Over the Counter) that knocks down a head cold in a few days versus a week or two. Works nicely on me. IMHO!

Thanks, Dennis. It is an infection and I have a 100.0 F temp along with it. I just bought one of those neti pots. I had never tried one before. I use a saline nasal solution; but I had not tried the neti pot wash. It flat opened my sinuses up.

I have never tried Zicam; I will give that a go next time. I am not one to take medications unless absolutely necessary. I will take an antibiotic for an infection; but, basically, I am a holistic medicine person. I guess it is my ancestry and the traditions of my elders.

    Carl,
I am the same way when it comes to taking meds....
Only use them when I am down and out. Then it takes longer to recover.
Zicam is nice to have around for cold and flu season.

Well hope you get to feeling better Carl. I know that Zicam really does a good job, of coarse unless an antibiotic is needed.

I hear ya about riding only when in top form. I had to go to L.A one morning and had been shooting pool till closing one night, got up and started to ride to L.A though Palmdale on a back road, all of a sudden I was all over the road I thought well maybe I'm a little to hung over to be riding.

I turned one corner and their was a flagman just happened to be a friend who worked for Asphalt Construction,( a road paving company) and when I stopped he walked up and I explained hell I almost crashed back there a few minutes ago maybe we had stayed out to late last night (he was with me). He just laughed and said we just had an earthquake a**hole. So I rode on only to get on the freeway and another after shock hit took me almost all the way into the right side barrier through the drainage dip.
I pulled over check my undies and sat there for a minute wondering if I should go on.
Not fun I tell you learned a lesson the hard way almost but was close enough to remember from then on.

Thanks, Eric. I have never ridden through and earthquake! But I have certainly ridden when I should not have been on a bike. I got away with it then; but I do not do it now. I guess one get a little wiser as one gets older. :) YOu know the old saying: "There are old bikers and there are bold bikers. There are no old, bold bikers." I have manged to become an old biker.

I'd just like to get one to do some short rides around town and maybe the Laughlin ride and Sturgis.
Pending on how soft the ride is.
