What is this OS?
Hello guys,
Can someone please tell me about Ubuntu 10.04?
Ubuntu is a linux distribution. It's totally different from Windows and it doesn't run Windows software.
Here is some info on Linux in general

Here is the ubuntu page, where you can learn about this particular distribution of Linux

And the current version of Ubuntu is 10.10.
I would call that the developers version. More of a beta

Ubuntu lists itself and "Linux for Human Beings". It is frequently touted as the easiest to learn for someone new with computers or migrating from another OS. A lot of people who move from Windows prefer Kubuntu as the KDE desktop looks more like windows than do others.
10.04 is the current LTS (Long Term Support) release. 10.10 is the latest release and is stable, just not supported as long. 11.04 is the upcoming version for those who want the very latest and don't mind using software, or an OS, that's still in testing.
If you're considering installing Ubuntu, read the documentation from the site and check out the Ubuntu Forums for more information. Feel free to join the forums even before you install. You'll find the crowd there to be quite helpful.
Above all, have fun.
Yes, I understand this...I'm a linux systems admin for a living. However, for the general joe who installs Ubuntu for the very first time, they need to realize that they simply cannot plop in their copy of Photoshop, or Office, or "whatever" game for Windows and install it within Linux. Personally, for me, if I go through the effort of not running Windows on the machine, I just prefer to not continue to run the Windows software. There seems to be plenty of alternatives out there which meet my needs. For games and such, I keep a Windows box available for home.
