To hold a horses leg while it is being shod. ie. have a blacksmith shoe it rather than a man with a bad cold shoot it in the head.

An early milking device for cows udders, to test fullness & clamp off momentarily when needed.

It is used whilst milking a cow, although it is not essential. The question is: What is its exact purpose?

Not quite. It is to stop something moving, but not the cow.

is it an udder clamp to hold the bucket to the udder
