    thinking logically it looks like you would put a nail in the forked bit thump it in then use the hammer bit to finish the job,obviously a hammer for folk who dont have a stepladder

    Horahhhh, And yes we have a winner , Well Done, yes it is exactly as you described it Boohbah, lets say a posse would use them for putting up the wanted posters
    up high so they wouldn't be pulled down.

    The top held the tack/nail and the side piece held the poster/ leaflet.
    So well Done Boohbah,
