    Not quite, John. Although it was used in clocks with a pendulum, it was invented much earlier than the pendulum.

    Not gravity.

    A clue: These were used in antique spring-powered mechanical watches and clocks, a ????? is a cone-shaped pulley with a spiral groove around it, wound with a cord or chain which is attached to the mainspring barrel.
