HTC released Gingerbread officially for the HTC Desire, but only aimed it at developers for now. They released the RUU, but removed a lot of apps, and haven't upgraded Sense afaik. There's a rooted ROM of it available already that I'll have a play with.
It's a nice effort they tried to release it, but the current release has a lot stripped out and apparently doesn't even have support for SMS and MMS in it. It should go on for some nicer Sense ROMs, but not really fair for just the general user.
I do use custom ROMs. I'm still on Oxygen at the moment, but I have a soft spot for Sense ROMs still
I'm using Infus3Th3ory as my ROM. It's pretty nice, I was using Das BAMF for a while. I'm also using some HTC Sense 3.0 stuff available even though it's not Full 3.0, and Android 2.3.4 on my Thunderbolt even though they're not out yet for it.
Much faster than my DSL.
I tried a Desire HD ported ROM for my Desire which included some Sense 3.0 stuff. Looked great, but was a bit sluggish on my Desire at times. I found a full Sense 3.0 theme for it though, and it did look great with the transparent navbar etc.
