Is it just me with Facebk, Twitter etc

Here is a topic I'd really like to hear some views about. Essentially I'm referring to websites listing on Facebk and asking you to follow them on Twitter ... etc. I can understand Facebk as a networking site ... it's great to keep in touch with basic messages. When my son went overseas the only way I knew he was safe & alive was by going to Facebk to see the exchanges between him & friends + photos. So I really appreciated that. It's superficial and all but for what it is it's good value. What I just don't get is why I would want to go to such networking sites to see another site ... say a place I want to buy something. Surely just going to that vendor's site is enough? It's like the local supermkt asking me to go to the community centre & the local cafe to see blurb about the supermkt. I'd just go directly to the supermkt! Ok I get it that sites want to promote but beyond that .. I'm scratching my head. Why follow a site on Twitter when you can just go to the site? Over to you ...is this networking gone mad or is there a point that I'm not seeing....?

p.s. I'm guilty as I have listed my site too ... for promotion as reciprocal links appear dead these days.

    It's making $ ...

I don't use either Facebook or Twitter and I'm getting pretty fed up with seeing little 'f' and 't' icons every bloody where.

know what you mean smarteyeball ... but how does directing people to a site's Facebk or Twitter page generate $ ? And why would any webmaster with any sense want to direct traffic away from the prime website?

To be honest mate, I'm not entirely sure who makes the money off who.

But the fact that these sites are being so prolifically advertised shows that there is a revenue stream for someone.

Ah ... sycronicity. Earlier today I received an ad (email spam) from Facebook telling me that for a fee they could do ...... etc for my business. So you're quite right and I guess they have a revenue stream from the ads they carry on their pages. ah the almighty $ again ...could have guessed!
