    What will happen when...

its June 1, 2010 and many people who willingly became self proclaimed "beta testers" aren't ready. Will MS take so much grief from careless people as to never release a beta/RC to the general public again?

Certainly hope not. I think the release to the general public was an excellent decision. Users best not complain about what they have to go thru at the close of RC. If they ruin the chance for the next beta version to be released to the GP, its really going to be a shame to those who fully understood the implications of "testing" Windows 7 Beta/RC.
    ---
The definition of "beta" as it relates to the PC/Software Industry, from Wiki:
    PC/Software Beta
    ---

    I can see it now...
...how quickly people will forget the joy and enthusiasm they had when they installed Windows 7 Beta/RC. Tickled pink when they found out they could install Windows 7 and try it for free, and now on March 1st, the same people are ranting and screaming bloody murder for the trouble of having to back up there data & settings, delete the OS, then install & setup there replacement.
    ---
Do you think there will be a lot of people complaining about what they need to do at the close of the RC Program?

Without a doubt. Like you said, people need to know that this is NOT a final version (beta/RC). The thing is that MS made an awesome product and it feels like it's a final version, and some people don't understand that they're still testing an OS. I hope it's not that bad of a fallout and MS lets us test windows 8...asap

Just think about the poor folks that "upgraded" their OEM (factory) Vista, there's no going back now.

. . .it really is sad, but if I was a betting person my money would be that those doing the loudest complaining will be those who down loaded the RC (and later) from the bit torrent sites. And, it will be those same individuals who will download the final from a torrent site with bad keys and virus then complain in earnest how bad Microsoft is for putting out such a bad O/S. When complaining they will use "M$" to punctuate they ignorants. Then I was wrong once. . .anyway I think I was wrong, then may be not.

There will be a lot of complaints. However, hopefully M$ made it explicitly clear (as in a baby could understand. there are people that dense) that the RC (and beta) were TEST builds, NOT the final release, and it is NOT a free OS. When people accepted the Download, they accepted that the build would expire, and should be ready to lose anything and everything under the install. If they did not expect that, they should not have used it.

I didn't say that ANYONE did. That is what they SHOULD have known when they used the OS.

What M$ is not giving me Windows 7 for free?? Those EVIL, Money hoarding *******S!!

LOL, sorry had to say it because I know its going to be said over a thousands times in blogs everywhere by people that think the world should give them everything. MS has sent out enough press releases to say this is a test OS and not a final product. I have been seeing on some torrent sites "Full cracked" versions of Win7 I cant wait for those to start showing up in my repair shop and those people saying what a bad product it is because they downloaded it and now their machine is now part of some zombie nation cause they wanted it for free.
But back on track their are always people out there that will complaine because the rest of the world wont drop to their feet and worship them.

While it was a great decision on many levels for MS, I suspect it was only to repair their image after Vista-related fiascos (capable/compatible/etc, hardware, drivers, etc) and NOT so much about users helping to find bugs or suggest features.

I'd say 20% seems right. and 3% of that might actually be stupid enough and try to sue.
