Here is what I did with Unity on a virtual machine which doesn't have 3d support;

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:unity-2d-team/unity-2d-daily
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install unity-2d

Last year I tired Ubuntu for a while.

It started to bring Unix nightmares from 30 years ago. No thanks on Linux. I will stay with MSFT Windows.

Did this surprise you? I'm always baffled when people try Linux and complain that it's like Unix.

As both a user of Linux and Windows...they both have a place for me. I am as comfortable on either one.

Just installed it in VirtualBox 4.06. Went in like a dream and the VirtualBox additions installed easily too. Like others I am not yet impressed with the Unity desktop, perhaps I need to play a bit.

When you're at the login screen, select your username (don't type password yet) and you can select the interface to use in one of the tabs at the bottom panel. Just select "Ubuntu Classic" for the old interface instead of Unity. This setting will stick when you restart etc unless you change it back to Unity.

Yeah, I log in automatically without showing so I just went to Applications-Login Screen, and changed it from there.

Did it surprise me that it brought back Unix nightmares from two generations ago. Yes it did, but then we all have a lot of stuff buried in our unconscious from the past.

On the other hand I thought that Ubuntu would be a lot more user friendly which it wasn't, not by a long shot. I won't even get into the printer driver and networking problems with Ubuntu.

Linux is a basically an attempt to add a user friendly GUI to to an on out-dated computer stone age technology.

Yes there is a place for Linux among the computer geeks and young people who don't know better. There is evidenced by the insignificant Linux share of the home computing market.

I think the install on my virtual machine exploded, as now Ubuntu looks shockingly similar to Windows 98...

I take it you mean the Unity Desktop. Fortunately the classic is still there.

Nope, I mean the toolbars turned the exact color of the classic windows theme, and it literally looks like Windows 98.

Help! Installed Ubuntu, deleted the Ubuntu Partitions. No boot!
I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my HP Mini 110-1116NR, then deleted the partitions that had Ubuntu on them, not knowing that Ubuntu comes with GRUB2, and sets itself as the default boot for that system. Now that GRUB2 is not installed, since it was on my only HDD, it looks for the GRUB2...

Anyone else looking forward to the new changes? I wish they'd put some focus on ATI as well as Nvidia drivers, but then again, aren't ATI drivers more open anyways?
