Ahoy Linux Gurus, SOS On Audio

After having 3 different versions of Ubuntu and having to use the sudo command in terminal for everything "including picking your nose" I learned that even basic things like getting your video resolution to stay the same require using the sudo command in terminal.

So it may be best to search Linux based forums for the solution as it requires using terminal to tell the audio driver which device to use.

Also I believe z3r010 would like non-windows based OS discussions to be posted in the Chillout forum as this is a windows based forum and this was the agreed upon arrangement as other members also wanted to discuss Linux based OS's.

It would be fine with me if he wanted to move the thread to Chillout. However, in the mean time I need to update by saying that the problem is not with audio in general, and I am getting both audio and video on some formats, such as mp4 and avi, but the majority of my videos are in mkv, and they have no audio. I remember a comment displayed during the setup for playing videos, which said that due to some legal reasons, that only "legal" videos could be played, and they gave examples of ogg, mp4 and I think it said theora, but that may be wrong, because my memory is not all that sharp.

Since I know that there is nothing illegal about mkv video files, I hope that there is some way to make them work, because I'm not about to convert the hundreds that I have.

It is referred to as restricted extras not illegal, which can only be obtained through software repositories of your Linux distro, Again you would be better of reading the reference material which is highlighted as I am unlikely to provide any further assistance.

Wasn't trying to be rude seekermeister just that I only tried SUSE for a couple of weeks thus "not much help"

And good to hear because I always had audio troubles when I tried Ubuntu taking 2 weeks to search for and rectify any problem, then next round of updates repeat process.

The best way I ran Ubuntu and SUSE was inside VMware as your windows bootloader cannot be damaged by the GRUB bootloader and no audio or video issues as the physical hardware on your computer is not used only hardware from Virtual machine.

The Virtual Machine folder can also be copied in good working order, to be restored in case of bad Linux Updates which have happened to me numerous times.
