"Which is better" is very subjective. For instance, I would stay away from the gateway like the plague because I haven't had much success with them however the next person may swear by them.
You would be best to actually go to a Best Buy and try it in person; this will give you a better oppurtunity to figure out which has a better look/feel to it.
Just to let you know, this laptop will be used primarily for surfing the internet, using microsoft office and watching videos online and playing DVDs and CDs. Do you think I need a dual core for this?
Also, I liked the specs on HP also but I have had bad luck with HPs in the past as the batteries have died fast, they get extermely hot and whenever watching a video whether online or DVD, the audio got messed up from the video and it was very distracting. I even updated all the drivers and this still occured. This is why I was leaning towards the other laptops, but HP might have gotten better and just wanted some other's opinions on the issue.
Nice laptops - if I were looking for one 10 years ago. But today I would not buy any of them. For $150 more you can get a nice e.g. Toshiba with an i3 processor and all the bells and whistles.
But if $350 is your maximun budget, the HP gets the closest to a modern laptop.
Here is a website with today's hot deals ( Laptop Deals - Deals2buy.com ). These are examples: (the second one has a nice processor - see comparison chart: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=AMD+Phenom+II+N660+Dual-Core )
