customize links, icons, menus, Win7

I teach computers to seniors, our web site is ** removed **. I am updating the tips page to reflect newer OS and programs. I have the following questions about some of the options from the start menu. Right click the globe and choose properties, when that comes up click the customize button upper right corner. This brings up the window that I have questions about.

1. Search other files and folders
a. Don't search
b. Search with public folders
c. Search without public folder
2.check or no check: Enable contex menus dragging and dropping.
3.check or no check Open sub menus when I pause on them with the mouse
pointer

In the case of #1 I have searched all kinds of ways within Win7 and cannot find any difference no matter which option is selected.
In case 2, nothing as far as contex menus or dragging and droppis effect either way. in the case 3 sub menus do not auto open whether this one is checked or not.

Can anyone explain this. For your information I find menus much easier to use for the dontol panel than links.

There are public folders across the windows 7 machine that can be accessed by any user, copy, write, delete, etc. The option one is simply searching including these, not including these, or not to search from the start menu at all in any other files or folders.

Enabling drag and drop means you can drag a program from the start menu into the start menu. The last option, I am not sure why hovering doesn't open submenus (i.e. programs) when it's selected, maybe someone else can shed light... Though it takes about three or four seconds for my machine of 'hovering' to activate the feature.

Thank you for your reply,

your first comment;

It does not make any difference how I search in the start search box no matter how this option is set even with "don't search" is set. Which brings m to question this option. I assume the intent was anything in the PUBLIC area could not be searched if set to "without". Again, does not make any difference. Microsoft also did not give me a clear answer. I am part of a 5 computer home network I call a workgroup not a homegroup.
I have file and printer sharing activated but must keep antivirus, mallware etc up to date.

Your second comment:

Your comment "drag from start menu into start menu" I do not understand this. I can drag and drop all over the machine whithout a problem no matter if this option is checked or not. Again, this is what prompted my posting.

My setup may be different than the mainstream Windows 7 since I am using the Pro version with the virutal PC and virtual XP so as to use some older very expensive software that does not have drivers for Windows 7 Pro.

The customization is for the start menu only, so you can drag and drop items in your start menu specifically.

How do I customize folder icons in Win7 ?
Hey guys I just joined and I was hoping someone could help me out. I want to use custom icons for my media folders, but I need it to be a permanent fix. Usually, when I set a custom icon and then share the folder with some one else the icon reverts back to the normal default folder icon. I know...

Icons in menus and folders load/display slowly
I'm running a reasonably potent system with Win7 x64, and it seems kind of sluggish at loading & handling icons. For example, after a fresh reboot, if I open the Start menu (or whatever it's called in 7) and click on All Programs, I can hear the hard drive being accessed and the icons sort of fill...
