Many years ago, when mammoths darkened the plains, I took an elective in movie appreciation. The prof said that to count as a "classic" a movie must be older than you. He said that watching the classics served a purpose: it encouraged you to see the people of that past as fully formed human beings, as complex and sophisticated as anyone today. It helped the young (and the not so young) to "get over themselves", to get past the smug condescension some have towards the "old days" and the old ways.
I liked that. He made a lot of sense... for a college professor. Heh.
Being of sound and and brittle bones.
There are NO movies older than Mike(Hopalong) and myself................We went to caves where they painted pictures that were suppose to have some kind of meaning. Just had a senior moment and can't remember what the meaning of the pictures were about.
Casablanca
Forbidden Planet
Rio Bravo
The Wizard of Oz
The Big Sleep
Yojimbo
The Maltese Falcon
The Wages of Fear
Edited to add:
Blade Runner
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Nobody mentioned "Duck Soup?" For the record, my 10 yr old daughter loves the Marx Bros.
Not to mention Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy, and Martin and Lewis.
