Let's not forget Welles the director/producer since he produced, directed, and acted in Citizen Kane. It's just my all-time favorite movie and I absolutely love the cinematography.

I agree entirely, it really is a cinematic masterpiece, which does great credit to the man.

There are some films you can watch over and over again - Citizen Kane is up there with the best.

Fair question, but being a classic is not just a matter of it's age, although most of the movies that I would consider classics are pretty old. For me, being a classic means that a movie is one that set or best typified a genre or standard. On the more subjective side, my preference toward what I consider classics is usually due to excellence in plot, acting the manner in which it was put together. All of which are critical elements in the overall character of the film. Obviously, opinions will vary as to what is important in the movie character, but I most enjoy movies that contain a morality that is not often found in modern movies...even if they are entertaining.

Not surprisingly, this thread has gone off in a tangent from my original intent, and instead of a single favorite, people are posting lists. Instead of something that somewhat resembles a classic, they are simply listing any movie that met their fancy. Don't get the idea that I'm complaining, I'm simply trying to refocus the thread back to it's original objective. However, I know that is not entirely going to happen, so Que Sera, Sera.

Trouble is, it's a bit like asking ten different people what colour the car was that was involved in a hit-and-run incident.

I'll lay odds the police would get four or five different answers.

Even narrowing your parameters to how old the film was or how many Oscars it received the list would still be skewed by peoples' tastes. For example, I think James Stewart was a brilliant actor, but my wife can't stand his voice so when I watch him in Shenandoah, I'm watching on my own.
