Reputation System - What did I miss?

Strange Rep system behavior - I think?

I don't give rep very often (as anyone can see if they review my profile) but give it when I think it's deserved and/or when I know I've benefitted from a post.

Today, reading https://www.sevenforums.com/installat...-happened.html I gave Kari (the OP) rep for the posting the question and following through. Then, I went back and attempted to Rep Obital Shark for the answer to the problem as I'm sure I'll be able to make use of that intel sometime the near future. But the forum says I gotta share the love a bit more before I can Rep Orbital Shark. As I last gave Orbital Shark Rep on 01Jul, I would have thought that being descriminating about when and to whom I give rep would satisfy the restriction placed to limit reputation inflation.

    What did I miss?

Firstly, i'm not answering because it's about me

I just happened to be here....

It's a combination of When you last repped the user & how much you've repped before trying to rep the same user. There is more info available on the link in my signiture.

    It's here: Reputation and Badges

How many different users must you give reputation to before you can hit the same person again? Administrators are exempt from this limit. 10

That's the line I missed. The policy is becoming much clearer - though I'm not sure I can completely agree with this one. Oh well - no worries.

I'm scratching my head here - so if one guy is really helpful to me and nobody else is, I can only rep the guy once until I rep 10 other people, even though he keeps saving my butt and everybody else is just mocking me (OK, probably for a good reason ) ? How about a time limit to prevent abuse instead?

I guess there's always something to criticise no matter what system you use .

I feel like I'm "looking the gift horse in the mouth" here, but that is EXACTLY my point of contention with the system.

Don't get me wrong .... I'm not complaining or criticizing. I so love this forum. The quality of the people and the quality of the help they provide so far out-weighs this one little nit-pick that it's hardly worth mentioning.

But, if you later decide to re-visit the design of the reputation system, you may want to take DJG's comments into account. But, don't do it on my account or to make me happy. I got over sweating the small stuff years ago!
