6 Reasons The Guy Who's Fixing Your Computer Hates You

Some NSFW language, but I had to laugh :)

By my calculations, about 96 percent of all computer repairs are done, not by the local computer guy or the Geek Squad, but by The Friend Who is Good With Computers. Often that friend is nothing more than an average computer user who knows how to look up error messages on Google, but it doesn't matter -- once they become known as TFWIGWC, they will get the call every time something goes wrong. And they will fix it, probably for free, because TFWIGWC pities you.

It seriously made my day. I'd forgotten how good Cracked.com was.

Sometimes, I just want to say to the people around me "GOOGLE". Here's a story...

Aunt : Are there new to get music nowadays beside *software censored by sevenforums.com*

Me : Yeah there is by *Method censored by sevenforums.com*. You need two things the software to download, and what you want to download. To software to download is *software censored by sevenforums.com*.

Aunt : How do I get it.
    Me (in secret) : *Faceplam*
    Me : Google the software.
Aunt : What do I do?
Me (In secret) : GAWD... I JUST TOLD HER TO GOOGLE THE NAME OF THE SOFTWARE. *FACEPALM x10*
Me : *sigh* type www. google.ca and then search for *software censored by sevenforums.com*

Then imagine the whole process of installing the software over phone then download the music. And sometimes, the music is so hard to find that it's better to go and buy the CD for 10$. Most of the time, it's for one (old) song. "Oh I happen to have that song in the head and want to have it". Plastic Bertrand yeah, yeah, yeah... Never found any of his music online... so you want to find some...

However I've been rather lucky. That "aunt" is rather safe and doesn't install anything bad so, since she bought her laptop, I didn't have to re-install Windows (7) at all. However my bro is rather intensive game wise and does planty of stuff and hum, some screw ups happened but nothing major happened. Since he had Windows 7 Home Premium (thanks Brink for that Upgrade copy of Home Premium), I haven't had to format yet.

My friend, however, haven't been that lucky... If was actually able to speak English, he would so much tale to tell you guys about. One time, while I was there, there was this 5-6 years old laptop with crap on it. Fixing with the computer itself was so... impossible. We actually remove the SATA 1.5" HDD (OMG, that saved us a lot of trouble being a SATA HDD!) and plugged it in his computer. Scanned with both MSE and Malwarebyte and rebooted the thing inside the laptop. Luckily enough, it was able to boot and the malware was gone. Dude.

I wonder when people will actually be able to understand this one word : Google. That would make things so much easier.

Excellent article. I'll have to make cracked one of my regular stops. Reading about these experiences was cathartic. I was in an IT support role back in the mid nineties working for a small software vendor. I was responsible for sales team support, deploying new laptops and a Windows 95 pilot rollout in the months before the official release.

Some of those experiences scarred me for life. I no longer help friends with computer problems because of the ignorance and duplicity I've experienced over the years.

Among the most offensive groups of ab-users were the liars who proclaimed my incompetence over dysfunctional systems that they had crippled either by physical abuse or by installing unauthorized and untested software. I did however silence the worse of these after one obnoxious asshat borrowed someone's system and emailed about two dozen people in the office about the "untested f---ed up" system I had given to him. He was among the first to get a Windows 95 laptop and used it in the office for a few days before hitting the road. Back then the Windows 3.1 version of AOL would replace the Windows 95 winsock.dll with it's own sixteen bit version. This broke his Windows 95 remote access. I replied to the email with a screen shot from his laptop with the AOL icon circled and captioned "WTF is this?" and "Must be some of the "I did nothing" that you claimed when I asked about any software you might have installed. ... Or perhaps AOL installed itself?" And finally "Did you know that the Windows 3.1 version of AOL will break the Windows 95 network stack?" ... The executive assistant to the CEO called me about fifteen minutes after the email went out asking me to stand down and that she would take care of this. She did. I fixed the system and gave it to my manager. I didn't have to speak with the asshat again.
