Computers will become far smaller and faster than that. So much so that mice and keyboards will no longer be needed, because they will be implanted in the human head (not mine), and they will have a forehead antenna for satellite WLAN, and a wrist mounted connector for interfacing. The users will be identified by the number 666.

I was honestly thinking about this and I have a view that is realistic.

In the time of Windows 95, the processor chip was the standard single core, a little more than 10 years later, the dual core processor has become standard. RAM however back then was mere megabytes, now, two gigs is considered decent, but four gigs is considered a better norm. Hard drives back then were barely gigabytes, now, having a terabyte hard drive is considered alright, with 500 gigs becoming standard.

So, having said that, in 10 years the processor standard will be an eight core processor with 16+ cores being the higher end. RAM may top off at 8 gigs, considering the fact that Windows 8 and future Windows systems will be more streamlined. Hard drive storage is a tough one to predict, it mostly depends on how people adopt this idiotic network drive called "The Cloud", but it could become four terabytes standard. Actually, it also depends on Solid State Drive technology and pricing, but since SSD technology is in its infancy and probably develop as fast as hard drives did last decade, I don't know....

Or, we could ditch all that and use quad core tablets. Oh yeah! Tablets might still be around that run Windows and are actually useful.

I also heard that the manufacturing accuracy required to get ringpulls to work on cans is far more accurate than anything on the moon landing craft.

    Non sequitur.

Hows about 3D laser storage cube instead of a disc drive where information is written at the meeting point of the 3 beams within a cube of storage medium? It could then be read using a similar 3D laser array that does not overwrite the data. As for processors, new materials will dictate smaller, thinner wafers of possibly organic material that will use optical communications paths. Forget about physical storage such as blu-ray etc that will be gone as being to slow and to restrictive in storager capacity.

It's probably easy to just say that we're going to have more of what we already have now, that is, more memory, more hard drive space, faster processors with more cores, etc. But I also agree that to even approach any level of accuracy with our predictions, we're really going to have to think outside the box. Personally, this is something hard for me to do. Are neural nets going to become personal? Are PCs going to start "thinking" and "learning," catering more to our needs and anticipating things in advance? I wonder if experts in the '60s could have predicted what we have now ... wireless networks, multi-core processors, touch-screens, solid state drives, LCD flat-panel monitors, mice and trackpads, the GUI, etc.

Since you put "thinking" and "learning" in quotes, perhaps you are only using them as metaphors, but if not, then I shall make a prediction. If learning is defined as simply acquiring and storing data, then we are already there, however, no computer will ever be able to think. Artificial intelligence is a popular term, spawned by science and sci-fi, but no computer will ever be able to do more than a programmed response. The programming may become much more cleverly done, so as to be able to mimic intelligence, yet they shall always be much as they are now...ingenious devices which will continue to evolve, but not necessarily for the better.

Unless ... are we just acting out what our genes are telling us to do ... and decision making is an illusion ... whoa ...

This causes me to think of small animals vs. computers, since computers nowadays and into the near future will pretty much have the same "processing power" as many organisms that you can find on this planet that have small brains. So if we think that animals can think, then...

But anyways, getting back more to what the OP was talking about, that is, what PCs may look like in ten years ... it reminds me of the time in the '90s when I was more naive and my friend bought his first Pentium PC before I did ... I actually asked him "What does it look like?" in such a way that I was suggesting that it was some kind of holy grail or magical device that would usher in a new era of computing beyond our imagination. As it turns out, it was a chip on a motherboard housed in a beige box. That was more than fifteen years ago. Maybe computer cases in ten years will really be wild and crazy!

Thinking goes beyond any of the physical aspects of the brain. The brain where some of the aspect of the spirit resides, thus brain physics effect the spiritual aspect of life, but the soul is that part of life that is not contained in the brain or the body. Even a lizard has a soul that no computer can equal.
