To one degree or another, just about every movie follows one of a very small number of plots. They change the actors, character names, culture backdrop, and sometimes even the genre, and the same plot gets used over and over and over. They might give it a twist, but that is just for camouflage.
While going through the iMDb listing for Prometheus, this was listed as the working title: "Untitled Alien Prequel". So similarities to Alien would seem to be expected.
That's why it cracks me up watching some of these send-ups of guys pitching scripts to moguls. "Yeah, It's like Spartacus meets The Flim-Flam Man"
Recently I saw a film that was supposed to be about the bohemian sub-culture of Santa Cruz CA. Sine I had been there several years ago I watched out of curiosity. They got the 3 exterior shots of Santa Cruz out of the way in the first 30 seconds. After that it was all filmed in "AnySuburb USA." Same old same old. :)
I sometimes wonder which is the greatest waste of of money...films or typical government spending. I have nothing against entertainment, but I see no reason why entertainment can't be more original and educational. Educational may be the wrong word, perhaps enlightening would be a better way to phrase it. As things are, it seems that we are inundated with continuous audio/visual experiences that tend to numb us. I suppose that may be because it is too difficult or expensive to write original scripts or produce them, but I'm left with the feeling that it is an intentional form of brainwashing. I'm not suggesting that everyone in Hollywood are conspirators, but I'm certain that some are.
