I am having a potential argument with my employer regarding certifications. Which I need, in my opinion.
So I ask the masses here, please vote corresponding alternative that applies to you. Assuming you got an MSC whatever, how did you get it and who/how was it paid for?
My vote do not count since I have no MS cert yet. But I have bought the books for 4 diff certs.
I have earned the MSCE on a couple of different occasions.
The first time, it was all me. I got some books, I got some test boxes at home and I played and played and played and took the exams. My employer did reimburse me for the exams.
The second time, they sent a handful of admins to a Windows 2000 bootcamp. They paid for this and it covered all of the tests.
I earned a CCNA which I did on my own.
I have an RHCE (Red Hat Certified Engineer) and the company I worked for sponsored an onsite training class for about 20 different admins in the company. This was the RH300 fast track course which included the exam. There were only 2 of us who passed the exam.
I'm currently interested in getting my VCP (VMWare Certified Professional), but my company will not pay for the class. Unfortunately with VMWare, you have to take an exam and pass it and take a minimum of a 1 week training course to be recognized as a VCP..they want to ensure you have at least 4-5 days of hand's on experience with the product. So, I'm in a bind on this one...as I don't really want to pay the $3,500 for the class out of pocket...and I know it won't amount to a pay increase where I am currently at...so unsure if it's worth it or not.
So, sometimes the company has paid, other times I have paid. With the market the way it is today, i don't see lots of companies paying for training and certs.
Damn...
But I am a Tech/Software enthusiast that actually work with IT for a living. I thought at least a third of the members were the same. So what are you? Cab drivers?

Employers vary from place to place. Usually the more forward thinking ones will pay for at least part of the fees as some like VM certs cost about $5000.
I worked for a major newspaper and they paid for everything from the ground up and gave pay bumps to anyone who finished the classes and got certified.
Small update (sorry for bump) but I just finished an 3 days ITIL foundaion course, all payed by employer. Just hope I made the exam as well...
