What about pal ?
I have a terrible habit of calling everyone "pal" be it male or female .... I've never thought about it being gender specific .... all my friends on SF are my pals, hope I haven't offended anyone

It's like the British and Aussie 'mate', usually addressing a male friend, pal. I don't know how to address a female.
