Windows 9

Although I expect that Windows 9 will be more cloud-oriented than 8, it won't be totally cloud-oriented. People want to be able to work offline and to use legacy software not available on the cloud.

Every cloud OS I've tried so far (some are n longer available) are slow and difficult to figure out. But I have saved some valuable documents on them. Some offer photo-sharing, but they're difficult to work with. But as computers continue to become more powerful and cloud technology improves, we'll benefit by having cloud OSes.

Microsoft will end up going the way of Call of Duty, releasing something new every 2 or 3 years isn't long enough. You have to make people wait and beg for something new, then release it. If you ask me I think that's why they kept Vista going for so long was because the more it sucked the more people would buy Windows 7 hoping it would be better...

I've recently read two blogs stating that Win 8 will be a "fill-in" between 7 and 9. Both authors considered 8 to be another vista.

The failure of Vista, however, was that most hardware couldn't run it, even hardware that met the requirements. Computers that had been built from the ground up for XP ususally couldn't handle Vista. But Win 7 computers usually handle Win 8's beta versions very well. And while it was hard to get around Vista's failures, using 8's traditional desktop solves most of its problems.

No, 8's biggest problem will be that many people will see no need to upgrade from 7. It is 8's ability to use mobile devices that will make it a success.

Here's a strange point from another forum: Windows 9 will boost the popularity of Linux.

No, not because people will abandon Windows in favor of Linux (They say that for every new version of Windows). It's because Win 9 will run a virtual machine so well that it will be easy for people to install Linux. The author felt that MS isn't afraid of Linux (which is used on about 1% of the world's computers). If buying Windows 9 is the easiest way to run Linux, MS has no complaint.

I can't see it getting much easier than just running VirtualBox or something. Personally I can't see what difference it would make, because the general public would ignore it, unless there's a big button with Linux Mint preconfigured.

Now that MS is making its own tablet computer, how will this affect Windows 9? Apple has successfully blended its hardware and software development (You can only run Apple on an Apple computer), while MS has successfully let competing companies develop Windows computers. Both strategies had worked, but now Apple is WAY ahead in the tablet and mobile markets.

MS might abandon its own hardware if the computer builders come up with something better than what Apple has. But if they don't, you can expect Windows 9 to come out on MS-built computers

Some phonies are easy to spot. A blogger claims that his cousin works for MS (and is giving out all kinds of technological secrets). He claims that MS already has a working version of Win 9, but that's no secret. They take Win 8 and add a new feature to see how it goes.

His claim that Internet Explorer 11 is completed is ridiculous. What would IE11 function on?

Courage, Solarmystic. Years ago, we used touchscreen computers at the paper mill, and they all had a mouse and keyboard. Either method worked fine. I am using the Windows 8 Preview Edition and my mouse and keyboard work fine. In fact, if you are using Windows 7, it IS a touchscreen OS, and yet your keyboard and mouse are working fine.

A tech writer suggests that Windows 7 might be the last successful computer migration. Since MS will support 7 until 2020, and Win 7 does what businesses want, there is no need to EVER upgrade. With XP still 2% ahead of 7 in popularity, it can be shown that companies are doing well at keeping old machines running far longer than expected.

When the XP machines eventually wear out, they will be replaced with new Win 7 machines that could last for a decade.

But there's a flaw in the author's logic. Win 8 costs less than Win 7, runs faster, and is more secure. If MS brings the cost of New OSes down, while raising the prices of old systems, they could still get the migration they want.
