will you skip Windows 8?

I have never waited. Regardless if it was a Windows OS, or a Mac OS. The testing and attempting to see what you can do with a new OS is where the fun is; why not just take the time to play around.

If you are worried about what will happen (crash, bsod, etc.) then you can always use a VM to play around with the new OS. Hell, go have fun. . .

People who say they are sticking with XP are using an OS that is now 10 years old and there have been 2 more releases since then.

People today who say they plan to stick with 7 are on the current generation and things are working well. In my experience, extremely well. And I prefer the approach of not fixing what isn't broken.

I think the big difference here with Windows 8 is the new GUI and touchscreen centric layout. This might be bothersome to a large number of people. Personally, I don't care for it, and I don't really want it. Based on how I presently use a computer and what I do, a mouse and keyboard is what I use. Perhaps a few years down the road, things will change and apps will run differently and I will want something different. If so, maybe then I will make a change.

At the end of the day, it comes down to overall happiness with what you have and whether or not you want to spend money to get something new. For me, I've still got my wife's laptop on Vista as I don't see any reason to spend money on Windows 7. So, if I'm not paying to upgrade Vista to 7, it's even harder to imagine that I would upgrade a 7 box to 8.

Can't say it enough. Setup a VM, and play around; you just might find that it is an OS that you may just use.

I am the vmware admin at my office. I use virtual machines all of the time. I virtualize everything.

But, I also pay for all of my licensing as well...so unless Windows 8 does something that blows me away, is signficantly faster than 7, or solves a whole bunch of problems that I currently have with Windows 7...even if I like it as a VM, I may not be willing to pony up the money for licensing.

Concur. That is what VM's can do for you. They allow someone to play around in the sandbox, thus they are able to determine if the new OS is useful to them. By using this method I was able to come the the determination that even as a public beta Win 7 could be run outside the VM (as a main OS) with out to many problems.
