Not only colleges, but schools too. We have to buy half a dozen books, all of them $50-$100 that we don't even touch for the year.

People that come to the forums and beg for help. Asking for help is one thing, but coming in here and saying something like "Computer won't start, plsssss help!!!!!!!" or anything with "urgent" in the title, then have no info at all in the post.
The hell do people think, we can read minds over the internet now?

Hum +1 for me I have to say that the reg items are usually self explanatory even to me - never had a problem.

The only thing is it wouldn't wipe a drive for me just recently.

I've been involved in writing several academic text books and have never made a single penny: indeed, you sometimes have to buy your own copy when it is published. You should be directing your anger at the publishers, not public-spirited academics who freely give their time and knowledge.

Maybe that's been your experience, but over here it is a big money-maker. I had a paperback last semester (http://www.amazon.com/Frauds-Myths-M.../dp/076742722X) which cost over $50 and was written by a friend of the professor teaching the course. It was a good book, was well-written, and served its purpose. It also would cost about $10.95 if it wasn't a "textbook".

I would also wonder why someone would write a book and not get paid for it.

I will agree with you that the publishers and college bookstores are in on the deal. I should have mentioned them as well. My experience last semester (and others like it) made me think of professors when the subject came up. I am also sure that the majority of professors work very hard for any money they may get from writing a book. :)

You are still assuming that the academic is getting some of that money. They aren't: the publishers are. I've had to buy several books to which I have contributed simply so that I have a copy of my own work. I have worked in the US and the UK and it was true in both.

As to why someone would do the work and not get paid for it - it does help with promotions and job applications to have some books on your list of personal publications, so it's not all complete altruism. But it most certainly is not done for the money!

Since this is a thread about what annoys you, being accused of making money out of textbooks that you have written for free in your own spare time is pretty annoying....

File reports with your mobile company every time it happens. Call customer support every time it happens. Be a pain in their butt, the company will get it to stop. It took me a lot of phone calls and complaints but it did stop. I am also on a limited text messaging plan so I told the mobile company I am NOT paying for SPAM. You may have one of those unlimited plans so that will not hold up, but it was the bit extra to get them to do something about it. I hate this kind of SPAM the one you pay for!!! Everyone with a mobile phone needs to fight this!!

    ICit.. go to DoNotCall.com
Register every phone you have on the DO NOT CALL listing.. It's FREE... if you get 3 calls from anyone after being on the do not call list, file a complaint with DO NOT call.. ( or who ever do not call suggest.) the caller is fines.
    DoNotCall.com
LET me also say this.. there are some who will NOT fall in the category of being fined.. as you will find out.
