Present day, you'll be stuck in a cubicle reviewing old code if you are a medium student, if you are talented you'll start your own enterprise.

i wouldn't know i'm out of the loop for years. But beginning 2000 the job lost it's shine so extrapolating from there and in view of the way the economy is not going to go anywhere anytime real soon.

Added to that there are a surplus of very talented programmers in the asian countries, which will do the job for a fraction of Western minimum wages.

    Define "Computer Programmer"! LOL!

I got out of the public programming business a long time ago, because 01100011% of clients I worked with didn't know what they wanted, and expected me to "fix it", because I was the programmer, and I can make the computer do anything.

It's an ungrateful line of work, to be sure!

These days I put my programming skills to use for personal reasons. In other words, to create utilities for my own personal use in order to get things done that commercial programs can't/won't let me do. For example, my own website. I created my own HTML editor that builds everything I need, leaving me to concentrate on the CONTENT of the site, not the design.

    Although I haven't updated in a while...

I'm actually also in the process of developing an in-house application for the company where I work to do the same thing - maintain and update the online shop website (Dynax). If you can recommend a good set of Delphi 2009 VCL components (preferably freeware with source) that can read/write Excel 2003/2007 files, I'd be grateful...

They outsource most, but still it's good, keep the dream alive. It will keep you going when things get though.

    The truth.

Computer science and programming are two different things. The area of study will open your eyes to numerous opportunities and interests.

Try machine language first, then assembly. If you "get it", you will do well.
