Why do my parents like Norton so much?

"What's the best AV" posts are second only to the "Intel vs AMD" posts here for quantity and vigor of reply's. In my opinion the best AV is the one located between your ears. Most people think that all you have to do is have you AV installed and you're safe. Common sense and at least some AV strategy will go a long ways no matter who's AV it is.
Update and deep scan on a regular basis and use that big CPU between your ears !
Don't forget Safe Mode Scans when you get something !

@marsmimar My parents bought it for me, but even if I paid for it using my money, they still wouldn't let me choose which AV to use. They said I would infect their network at their work if I got a virus. The thing is, I only ever got a virus on my computer once and they thought that would spread through the network to all the other pc's where they work. I don't know if this is even true.

I can tell you straight off Norton is liked by your folks cause it was one of the First
    Anti Virus programs

The program was rated Number one for many of years ,I'm not going to lie I used Norton many times Win 95 through 98

Then I used Mcafee , I started Noticing Norton Blocked alot of content that was never harmfull ,it actually became a pain in the butt you basicly had to strip it down to do what you need too with out all the alerts

    Mcafee same deal ....

I use Webroot spysweeper been useing it for years now ,don't mind paying for a Anti Virus but they also shouldn't cost over 25 Bucks Norton /Mcafee and a few Others are seriously OVERPRICED !

There is No ANTI VIRUS worth 60 to 80 bucks a year That money could be used for other things

I agree with the free MSE but it only covers so much but then again if you only do light work not downloading from other linked sites and keep it to the trusted one's you should be good

But if your the Adventurous type and don't know any better it is smarter to stick with what your parents had installed that way they can't blame YOU if the wrong thing went down
    Makes sense right ?

@solarstarshines That does make sense. Maybe Norton 2012 will be better, but I still think $100 is overpriced, I mean, isn't it?

Haha funniest topic i read at sevenforum............ Sorry gln2d3
I feel strange that he have to leave home/give up computer for not using antivirus of his family wish.
I think family should be mature enough to slove out this types of problems after all its a small matter to be concern so much.

On the main topic Norton 360 5.0 is quite light on system and using little bit of resource even it looks like large demon in front of mse so u dont have to worry about that.

Last it will be your decision to stick with norton or other av as you know your family better than anyone else.

Dont take the matter seriously and use any av which can give peace in family rather then giving tension after all family comes first

Your parents are smart people. NIS is the safest bet for good protection. You would have a hard time to find anything equal or better - maybe ESET or G-Data.

@GamePlanner I know they're only AV's but you get so into them that you have those sort of discussions. Anyway, maybe I'll be better of with Norton...

Yes indeed sometimes Parents/olders orders irritate as young generation finds its nothing more than stubbornness
I am too in your league

Overall now the problem is solved and you acted like a good family member to stick with family choice Hats off to you

    Dont worry be Happy

@GamePlanner Thank you. I think I have solved this problem now. Maybe NIS is the one my family prefers.

I used to be a big fan of Norton back in the day. Then I hated the bloatware they had become. The latest AV roundup at Max PC says they have changed their ways, shed the bloat, and are actually really good now.

(But not enough for me to switch from the free MSE, which uses about 80MB of RAM on my system, by the way.)
