    Feeling discouraged.

So today, I have had a very bad experience with one of my posts helping someone in the Crashes and Debugging forums. I was told that I did not clearly read the person's post and that my response was therefore impersonal and useless. I missed one line in his initial post that was pretty small and easy to skip over (assuming it was there to begin with and wasn't edited in after the fact), and then was accused of copying and pasting from another thread for my suggestions without even reading the problem.

I now am wondering if I am taking the wrong tact in helping people on those forums... It is the third time this week that I have had my work questioned... Thoughts? Should I give up?

I just read the thread, it seems that you put quite a bit of effort into that post. Definetely don't give up though, i'm sure you've helped hundreds of different people in your 2000 odd posts :)

Nah, keep doing what you're doing......that is "being helpful".
Although it may not be right to copy someone word for word, a generous rewording should suffice.
I've reworded, goofed, erred, offended and probably made more than a few people mad.
At over 1900 posts, I'm sure you've helped quite a few people.
Keep up the good work! :)

Actually, the only copying and pasting I did was using my own words. I keep an .rtf file with all my suggestions so I don't have to write them out each time since I am generally helping 15-20 people at a time. I just judiciously pick the steps that best fit a given scenario after CAREFULLY reading the person's posts. I admit that sometimes I miss a line when reading, but I didn't feel it justified being jumped on as I was.

Let's face it, sometimes it's hard to understand new members questions anyway!

Glad you still felt like I was helpful with the fan issue. I do think that fan you picked provided good cooling based on the reviews I read, and it didn't seem to have any "hurricane" noise complaints.
