Windows XP forever? The OS that just won't die | Software News - Betanews

We're closing in on eight years since XP first hit the market and began the long process of making us finally forget we ever used Windows 95, 98, and Windows Me. By anyone's standards, it's been one of Microsoft's most visibly successful products. It still runs on some 60% of all PCs years after it was supposed to have been retired as a front-line offering. It's sold around 800 million copies since its initial release. And if piracy is the sincerest form of flattery, hundreds of millions more illegal copies are in use across the globe. In an age where icons are in desperately short supply, this is as iconic a product as it gets.

How long do you think it will take until Windows XP will be as dead as 95 is today?

There are plenty of people out there, who can't afford newer hardware or they are satisfied with what they have, for who Win7 is not an alternative.

Not only because of performance, but more because of missing drivers for their hardware that will never be updated to Win7.

I think XP is here to stay for at least another 4 years.

Until my brother-in-law's Dell GX-260 dies or is consumed by the fires of Hades!

Many people will NEVER upgrade their operating system. They will eventually have to upgrade their computer.

i still use xp. im using right now. 7 is still a big box of tinker toys to me, but will most definitely become my main OS soon enough.
xp had its run, time to hang it up, imo. my quess is that 7 will have at least the same life span of xp, maybe longer. it's not common for MS to "get it right" but the got a bulls-eye with 7 (and xp imo).... time will tell

there are many millions today using xp, who don't even know what an 'operating system' is.

they ain't going to upgrade until their computer dies on them, then they'll go out and buy a new one which will come with 7 pre-installed.

how many people are going to buy a 7 computer, then downgrade it to xp? not many, i think...
