    note the underline represents a base value multiplied by a thousand.

    Its much more effort putting a line over the number than under and thats what they did on that page.

    the Romans didnt have a need for large numbers and the line system I believe is actually Medieval, but its all in fun anyway

    The practice does date back to Imperium Romanum, but it was not standardized, if you will. That came later.
