I don't think Brink is related to this guy. He is just plain ugly.... The guy above, not Brink. :)

Microsoft had their own servers hosting their own newsgroups but decided to give them up to concentrate on forums instead, like the Answers one and all the Tech forums.
The newsgroups didn't go away though as some other newsgroup companies hosted them, that is why Microsoft never had a Windows 7 newsgroup of their own that was started I believe on one of the Alt. groups.

That's my quick explanation of the situation but I expect someone could give you a better take on it.

I have not met anyone personally either, but feel I have made some very strong friendships here.

not met anyone but spoke to Kesume on the phone and also spoke to sassofalco on skype, there's nothing funnier than an aussie on skype lol.
