I have a new verizon SIM card, can I put it in an Iphone 3gs

I just got a Samsung Stratosphere (Verizon) in December and it had a SIM card and I dropped it and broke it. My friend is willing to give me an Iphone 3g, but her phone is an AT&T phone.

I know this is an old topic, but will it work? I also read in a different post that AT&T would unlock it for my friend...would that make it compatible with my SIM?

Sorry I am pretty lost here
