I've only bought one pre built computer back in the 486 days. It was a packard bell 486 SX, you couldn't even add more RAM to the thing. I replaced the gimped SX chip with a DX chip and from then on I was hooked on building my own systems.

I have a Dell Dimension 5100. It is still a great computer. It is going to be 7 years old this June.

That's not a bad thing to be hooked to.

It's a lot of fun and a great hobby.
I do use a Panasonic CF-19 Toughbook at work, for what I do it's pretty good, but always feels super slow compared to my home system.

Here is a picture comparing the toughbook and my home system.

The HP desktops are a lot better than the Dells. But the laptops are not that great.
