Actually Megapixels don't matter, the sensor quality and the amount of light it can gather matters, but 6MP shall be decent enough.

So the bigger the lens the better?

The size of the lens shall not play an important role in general photography but the bigger lens, the bigger the aperture, the more light gets into your camera - the sharper the photo. Check out some camera reviews to ensure that the image quality satisfies your needs.

6 megapixels for general picture taking is plenty. Unless you plan to print out things larger than 8x10.

As others have said, the quality of the sensors and the lens is the MOST important thing.
