    Nokia to Announce an AT&T 3G-Compatible N900

    Nokia to Announce an AT&T 3G-Compatible N900
T-Mobile users to enjoy it starting with October

Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia officially introduced the highly anticipated N900 Internet Tablet only a few days ago, yet it seems that the device is already making a lot of fans around the world. Some of these fans are from the US and, while the device has been announced to come with support for WCDMA 900/1700/2100 MHz bands, and T-Mobile's 3G network is expected to see the N900 running on it starting with October, some people would very much like to see it working on AT&T's 3G bands.

In order to be compatible with AT&T's network, the handset would have to include support for WCDMA 850/1900/2100 MHz, and, although this feature hasn't been announced yet, it seems that it will become official in the near future. According to The Nokia Blog, one of their readers asked the mobile phone maker about a variant of N900 that would provide support for AT&T's bands, and it seems that the company has stated that “an announcement will be forthcoming.”

Here's what Nokia has reportedly answered:

You are correct, we’ve announced the Nokia N900 yesterday. We have not announced where it will be available but have just said that it will be released in select regions.

Regarding the network bands, you are correct – we announced a WCDMA 900/1700/2100 MHz bands. We have not made any announcements regarding an 850/1900/2100 MHz band device. An announcement will be forthcoming.

Nokia's response does not say for sure that the AT&T version of N900 is on its way, though the final sentence might be seen this way. For what it's worth, we might learn that the announcement will target other carriers, and not AT&T, which, although it has a lot of Nokia phones working on its airwaves, might not go for a device that competes directly with the iPhone. Hopefully, more details on this will soon emerge, so stay tuned to learn the news.

Update: According to BGR, the last sentence in the email does not come from Nokia, so the rumor turns out to be false.
